Teaching philosophy

I strive to achieve excellence in teaching by embracing the following pedagogical goals: (a) create a supportive, inclusive learning environment, (b) help students apply knowledge and skills to real-life teaching and research contexts, and (c) integrate scientific research evidence into special education teaching. Moreover, I am committed to mentoring doctoral students.

I view doctoral students as colleagues and provide them with individualized support to help them become independent researchers. Such efforts include engaging students in all stages of the research projects, from conceptualizing a study and writing grant proposals to collecting and analyzing data as well as writing up manuscripts. Throughout this process, I support students’ critical thinking and writing skills and provide scaffolds to hone their quantitative methods skills.

CEP 941 Academic Issues: At-risk and Special Education Students

Courses Taught at Michigan State University / Face-to-Face doctoral seminar / Role: Instructor

This course is a doctoral seminar focused on developing a sophisticated understanding of the role that learning theories have played in intervention research, principles of intervention research design (with a focus group design) and methodological considerations in designing intervention research.  Specifically, this course focus on methodological issues and theory in conducting intervention research in core academic areas (e.g., literacy [reading, writing] and mathematics) through critical reading/discussion of exemplary intervention research in the field.

"Dr. Cho provided an outstanding list of readings and course content. She was systematic and organized, and she obviously has a wealth of knowledge to share.

She also makes the course enjoyable because of her efforts to get to know students and understand their needs and interests."

"I really enjoyed the in-class discussion, lecture, student presentations and written assignments."

"I learned so much! I loved this class. :] it was challenging but great."

"The instructor does an incredible job at giving real life applications of things taught in the class. I learned about so many things in this course and actually retained them. The instructor's ability to explain information in functional ways is unmatched. The instructor knows how to actually explain concepts. Others should take notes from her."

"I loved the use of videos to demonstrate and show various strategies that we were discussing..."

Hierarchical Linear Modeling in Educational Research

Courses Taught at Vanderbilt University / Doctoral level / Role: Teaching Assistant

This course provides an introduction to Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). HLM is used when a data possesses some form of nesting structures, which include data collected among clustered units, such as students within class as well as in repeated measures nested within persons. Students learn model building processes and different types of HLM models including individual growth curve models frequently used in applied educational research context.

“Eunsoo was committed to helping students in the class and to her own learning. She presented course material on several occasions and had clearly thought it through carefully. She completed grading quickly and provided helpful comments."

.”

“Eunsoo was very knowledgeable of HLM, and committed to helping everyone understand the material. Her grading of assignments was clear and her comments were helpful. When she led class her talks were well organized and had very insightful illustrations.”

"Fantastic Eunsoo! Thank you so much for all your help. You were always quick to respond and very thoughtful in your responses. It was clear you knew the subject matter very thoroughly and could explain it in a very tangible manner."

“Provided very helpful feedback on homework and labs.”
