WELCOME TO OUR LAB

The LLaMA lab aims to develop our scientific understanding of contextual, cognitive, and motivational factors and processes involved in reading (but also writing and mathematics) development for students with and without learning difficulties and emergent bilingual learners. We leverage such knowledge to develop assessment methods that aid early identification of learning disabilities and interventions that address cognitive and motivational needs of students with learning difficulties.  We are interested in positively impacting students with learning difficulties by researching the following questions.

  • What factors (e.g., cognitive, motivational, environmental) help children become proficient readers?

  • What sets apart students with learning difficulties who eventually overcome their challenges from those who continue to struggle?

  • How can we screen and early identify students who are at risk for learning disabilities?

  • What are the best assessment practices for understanding students’ strengths and weaknesses to guide instructional and placement decisions?

  • What types of instructional support do students with learning difficulties need to acquire academic skills and will necessary to be successful in school?
